14 October 2017 Indi Dive trip to Malapascua, Philippines – from $1255 - 2 spaces

6 May 2018 Indi Dive  trip to Dumaguete, Philippines – from $1195 – spaces

On 14 October 2017 we are staying on the island paradise of Malapascua, the Philippines.

mi mii

We will be staying for 6 nights and diving with the best recreational and technical diving centre on the island, Evolution Diving http://evolution.com.ph/All the rooms at Evolution are just a stone’s throw from the beach and surrounded by palm trees, sand and hammocks. In one of the quietest areas of Malapascua, Evolution offers you a great location to rest, relax and unwind between and after diving. All rooms have complimentary drinking water and personal terraces, just metres from the beach, restaurant and dive shop.

Malapascua is beginning to get a worldwide reputation for incredible diving which means now is a great time to come, before it gets too famous. It is the only place in the world you can reliably see thresher sharks and is possible the best place in the Philippines for big fish encounters. It is still a quiet island and the resorts, restaurants and dive shops are nestled amongst the palm trees along the main beach. There are not so many, so it does not feel at all crowded.

threshuse thresherbreach

The diving here is truly world class. In Asian Diver magazine, Monad Shoal was named number 11 in the top 101 dive sites in the world. And since it has become even better with daily manta sightings. Malapascua is of course famous for its daily thresher shark sightings. Thresher sharks are a deep water shark and are very rarely seen by divers. Malapascua is the only place in the world they can be seen every day. They are very distinctive with their long tail, which is about half of their body length.

thresherturn shark2

Malapascua is also very well known for incredible macro at all its dive sites. You can see many types of shrimps and crabs, including harlequin shrimp, ghost shrimp and xeno crabs. Pipefish are ever present including several types of ghost pipefish. Night diving is spectacular, with mandarin fish mating all over the place, seahorses, bobtail squid, sea hares, and huge crabs and sea stars. Mimic and blue ring octopus can be seen as well as the occasional stargazer and hairy frogfish.

frogfish pygmyseahorse

There are several wrecks at various depths for all levels of divers from beginner snorkelers to technical divers including a couple from WWII. The depths range from 10m to 70m. One of these is the Dona Marilyn Wreck located one hour away from the dive resort. It is a former 100m long passenger ferry which sank in 1988 during a Typhoon.

Day trips to nearby Gato Island can also be organized to observe Nurse Sharks, Whitetip Reef Sharks and even the rare bamboo Sharks resting in small cracks. Kalanggaman Island is also a great day trip for amazing reef life. Early morning dives have been arranged to try to spot the Schooling hammerhead sharks around Kimud Shoal.

The Craic House is Evolution Diving’s bar and the best bar on Malapascua, no ifs, buts or maybes. It’s an Irish pub on a Filipino beach, or a Filipino pub with warm Irish hospitality and a Celtic commitment to fun and frivolity. You choose.

craic house malapascua bistro chh

The Craic House’s goal is simple but almost unique in The Philippines – it aims to provide a contemporary feel by ensuring progressive music, progressive food and cold, cold drinks are always available and affordable. Just because those Thresher dives can be a bit on the early side it doesn’t mean you should turn your back on one or two nights of food, music, conversation and fun at The Craic House.

The Evolution dive team are always ready to help you have the best dive experience possible. We do four dives a day and bring a lot of variety into our schedule. We go to Monad Shoal to see Thresher Sharks just about every morning.

We visit  local dive sites like Bogtong Bato, Lapus Lapus, Chocolate Island or we do incredible day trips to Gato Island, the Dona Marylin or Kalanggaman Island. And of course our famous Evolution House Reef is available everyday.

Diving at Gato Island (Included on this trip, subject to site conditions).

Gato Island is a sanctuary and protected breeding location for the beautiful Sea Krait (sea snake). We’re almost guaranteed to see the resident White Tip Reef Sharks. This island is alive with nudibranchs, Harlequin Ghost Pipefish, Pygmy Sea horses and an endless amount of other macro surprises. Gato is always tough for photographers – macro or wide angle? We recommend diving Gato at least twice – one with each set up!

Dive Evolution’s House Reef
Our very own house reef is one of the best dives in the country. Just 3 minutes from our beach front is an incredible array of macro delights. Here we repeatedly see pairs of Crinoid Squat Lobsters and Imperial Shrimps. At dusk dozens of Bobtail Squid appear. Coconut Vein Octopi are regulars and we find seahorses on every dive. Snake Eels poke their head from the sand and Stargazers make occasional appearances too. Robust Ghostpipefish and an array of Mantis Shrimp species are also part of the Evolution House Reef experience. And that’s just for starters

About Malapascua Island

At first glance Malapascua Island is the quintessential paradise island – a never ending white sandy beach, thousands of coconut trees drooping over the foreshore where the lapping azure ocean counts out the passing of time. And for visitors to Malapascua Island this is the reality. However Malapascua Island is also a very real, very vibrant part of The Philippines. Home to an estimated 5000 people, Malapascua Island is a living, breathing community where life has remained more or less unchanged for generations. Malapascua Island has no banks, no health centre, no doctors, no cars, no pharmacy and no Starbucks! If you want to come and share a little piece of paradise then this is the trip for you.

Getting there

To get to Malapascau you need to fly to Cebu Airport  (Mactan Cebu International Airport) then get to Cebu City (about 20 minutes by taxi). From there you need to head for Maya by road then catch a boat to Malapascua. Don’t worry about the logistics of getting to Malapascua from Cebu as we have arranged private air-conditioned vans to get us to our private boat transfer which will drop us directly at our resort beach! This return transfer service is included in the trip price. You just need to get to Cebu City. The quickest and easiest flights from Perth are with Singapore Airlines – Perth to Cebu via their hub at Singapore. You can also go through Manila with a myriad of operators or through Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific. The latter may be the best option for those with Qantas points to spare.

Optional Stopover

If you want to kick back and relax after a few days of adrenaline-fueled diving then some of us will be stopping over at the Quest Hotel in Cebu City for 2 nights on the return journey (Friday, 20 and Saturday, 21 October). https://www.questhotels.com/en/hotels/view/6/quest-hotel-and-conference-center—cebu – This hotel costs about $70 per night and has a great pool with a bar. It is convenient for the malls in Cebu should you wish to carry out some retail therapy. Some guests have opted to stay here on Friday, 13 October before departing for Malapascua early on the morning of Saturday, 14 October. Our private transfers are collecting us from outside the front of this hotel at 7.30am on Saturday, 14 October. This early pick up means that we can reach the resort in time for lunch and an afternoon dive. There is no time difference between Cebu, Malapascua and Perth.

A deposit of $450 is required now to book with the balance due by 25 July 2017. This is non-refundable and non-transferable so please make sure you are 100% committed. If people back out we have to sort out name changes, itinerary details and this costs time and money. The package price for private charter is based on achieving the minimum applicable number of travellers.

As soon as we book your package we pay your accommodation in full, we can’t get that back. It is up to you to cover the trip with insurance. We understand you may have an issue which means you cannot come on the trip after booking and paying your deposit. It is down to you to insure yourself against a potential cancellation or any other factors which may impact financially on you before during or after the trip.

It takes a lot of time and effort to arrange these trips. We are providing professional diving staff to look after you during the trip. They invest a good deal of time answering enquiries, helping with equipment issues, researching logistics and ensuring you have a good time.

You are not going on the trip until we receive a deposit from you. If your deposit comes in after the trip is full we will refund it.

A lot of the diving here is deep – normally 25 to 40 metres. If, in the opinion of an Indi Dive or an Evolution Diving staff member, you are not suitably qualified or do not have sufficient experience to safely dive at any of the chosen sites you will not be permitted to dive at those sites. The PADI Advanced Open Water Course only takes 2 days to complete and we can conduct this course for you prior to travel.

It is also recommended that you use enriched air nitrox for some of the dives due to the build-up of nitrogen associated with multiple air dives over multiple days. We can easily train you in the use of enriched air nitrox before or during the trip.

If you do not specify a person we will attempt to match roommates to the best of our ability. If there are no twin rooms left to share you may be placed in a single room. Only 45 minutes from Liquid, Apo Island is probably the most famous diving destination in this region and it lives up to its name. Fantastic year round visibility, stunning healthy soft and hard corals, schools of fish, turtles, bumphead wrasse and of course the chance for an encounter with a large pelagic.

Apo Island has a little something for every level of diver, whether you are newly certified open water diver or an experienced Divemaster you will no be disappointed.

aaaapoaaaapoa

Coconut Point at Apo Island is for the more experienced diver only, this site is commonly referred to as the ‘washing machine’ due to the very strong currents that are normally always present. Large schools of trevallies, jacks, anthias and snappers are regularly seen here. The large slope also creates a great hiding place for turtles and the occasional meter long bumphead wrasse.

aaa blueray

The strong currents attract a lot of marine life, a stretch of sand between two rock cliffs creates a natural shelter where it is possible for divers to hide from the current and watch for the larger pelagic to pass by.

For those lucky divers it is also possible to spot reef sharks, manta rays and occasionally a whale shark!

manta whaleshark

Katipanan dive site at Apo Island is a nice easy dive site for all divers; names after the small cowry shell that is often seen amongst the healthy soft corals. This site has little to no current, making it a great dive for beginner divers. It is possible to see turtles and sea snakes gentle cruising through the corals and over the sandy reef. This site can be dived in two directions making a great double dive.

Dauin Coast diving offers a wide array of dive sites for different levels and interests. The black volcanic sand that stretches along the coast creates a perfect habitat for critters and strange creatures making this region one of the best in the world for muck diving.

You will be amazed by the weird and wonderful things you will find living in the ‘muck’. It is not all about the muck though!

pygmyseahorse blue ring

The coast also offers some stunning coral reefs, great drift dives, mandarin night dives, turtles, schooling fish and if you are lucky a passing whale shark can all be seen along the Dauin Coast.

shorse mandarin fish

Diving at Sumilon Island about 90minutes boat ride away from Liquid is a great day out. The first official marine sanctuary in the region, you can expect crystal clear waters with 30metres plus visibility.

Gorgeous coral – both hard and soft with a healthy abundance of marine life, with the odd surprise be it a pre-historic sized turtle or a blacktip or even a passing whale shark.

sumil sumilon

Sumilon Island is actually part of Cebu but is nearer to Dumaguete City. It is known for its crystal blue water and amazing visibility and of course, its marine sanctuary adopted by the Siliman University in Dumaguete. Sharks – whale sharks and hammer heads – are occasionally spotted here hence the site called “Shark Avenue”.

Indi Dive has booked the whole resort at Liquid Dumaguete. This enables us to have full control of diving activities and privately enjoy all of the great facilities this resort has to offer. Dumaguete is a vibrant university town and there are daily flights from Manila and Cebu with Philippines Airlines and Cebu Pacific providing the services. We would suggest flying into Manila as a hub, staying over night in Manila the night before the trip then taking the short hour or so flight from Manila to Dumaguete.

Our guiding instructors will be staying over night in the Garden City Grand Hotel in Makati on Saturday 5 May 2018 – https://www.citygardengrandhotel.com/ – They will then fly from Manila to Dumaguete on the afternoon flight with Philippines Airlines. They will also be staying in the same hotel for 2 nights on the return leg if you want to mirror their itinerary and include a stop over on the way home.

Flights for travel to/from Perth, Manila and Manila Dumaguete will become available 330 days before the trip dates. There is plenty of time until the trip and it might be better to wait for an airline sale before booking your flights. Last year our staff travelled from Perth to Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia and on to Manila from Kuala Lumpur which cost $230. They returned from Manila to Kuala Lumpur with Cebu Pacific and Kuala Lumpur to Perth with Air Asia for $300 making the total return journey cost $530.

Although there is plenty of time until this trip spaces are limited and our trips tend to book up very quickly. There are only 8 fan rooms and 6 air conditioned rooms at the resort. Once they are gone they are gone!
